Lean on me/Opri sa o mňa 2022

Experimentálny fotografický cyklus s pracovným názvom Fotografické ikony, vznikol ako alternatíva k tradičnému písaniu ikon s dogmatickými pravidlami, ktoré ikonopisectvo zahŕňa. Ale aj dogmy potrebujú rozprávať novým jazykom. Boj dobra a zla má inú formu dnes, ako mal v 9. storočí. Ako ľudstvo sme sa posunuli inde, rovnako sa posunul aj náš jazyk a prostriedky, ako hovorí kurátorka výstavy Natália Cunik, a pokračuje: Svätí, zobrazovaní na klasických teologických ikonách nezmizli, ale pribudli k nim noví. Všetci sme tajomstvom a záhadou neviditeľného, obrazom Božím. Ikony nevznikli ako umenie; eikon – obraz; reprezentoval prítomnosť Boha. Neuctievalo sa drevo, na ktoré sa písali, ani farby, látky pigmenty – tie boli len elementami tajomného rituálu; uctievali to, čo predstavovali, cestu z viditeľného do neviditeľného. Ikony reflektujú tajomstvá Boha skrz použitie obrazu. Pripomínajú nám neviditeľný rozmer nášho bytia. Tváre ikon na výstave, na ktoré sa pozeráme nesú v sebe artefakty minulosti (interpretujú patróna svojho krstného mena), prešli celou evolúciou až do podoby dnešnej, zrelej, jedinečnej, ale zároveň stále sa formujúcej. Použitie "modernej" technológie nanášania fotografickej emulzie odráža progres, cestu, ktorú ľudstvo prešlo.

Opri sa o mňa.. o kohokoľvek sa opierame a môžeme oprieť, spoj, ktorý túto väzbu umožňuje, je láska. Neviditeľná ako všetky ostatné záhady a tajomstvá. Lebo z času na čas sa potrebujeme o niekoho oprieť, z času na čas nám treba pomôcť vidieť.

Diela tak spostredkúvajú pohľad do histórie, maliarske a fotografické umenie prepojené pocitmi z výrazov portrétovaných reálnych ľudí, s obrazov – ikon, ktoré boli vytvorené "skutočným svetlom" pri použití analógovej fotografickej technológie akoby "svetlom Božím". Práve táto Monikina kombinovaná autorská technika umožnila prenos fotografického obrazu na drevo alebo papier Tyvek®. Niektoré ikony domaľúva, používa techniku zlátenia, pričom ostávajú fotografickými portrétmi dnešných ľudí v ikonických podobách (preglejka 60x72 cm, 48x60 cm). Niektoré opätovne fotograficky recykluje použitím fotografickej koláže, keď do nich zasahuje  prírodnými materiálmi a vystavuje z nich opätovne rámované fotografie rozmeru A4.

/The experimental photography series, with the working title Photographic Icons, was created as an alternative to the traditional practice of "writing" icons and the dogmatic rules inherent in iconography. Yet, even dogmas need to speak a new language. The struggle between good and evil takes a different form today than it did in the 9th century. "As humanity, we have moved forward; likewise, our language and the means we use have shifted," says the exhibition curator, Natalia Cunik, who continues: "The saints depicted in classical theological icons have not vanished; rather, new ones have been added. We are all secrets and mysteries of the invisible—made in the image of God." Icons were not originally created as art; eikon—meaning image—represented the presence of God. It was not the wood onto which they were written that was worshipped, nor the paints, fabrics, or pigments—these were merely elements of a mysterious ritual. What was revered was what they represented: the path from the visible to the invisible. Icons reflect the mysteries of God through the use of imagery. They remind us of the invisible dimension of our existence. The faces of the icons in this exhibition carry artifacts of the past (interpreting the patron saints of their baptismal names); they have undergone an entire evolution to reach their present state—mature, unique, yet still forming. The use of "modern" technology in applying photographic emulsion reflects the progress and the journey humanity has taken.

"Lean on me..." Whomever we lean on and can rely upon, the bond that enables this connection is love. It is as invisible as all other mysteries and secrets. Because from time to time, we need someone to lean on; from time to time, we need help to see.

The works thus provide a glimpse into history, where the arts of painting and photography are intertwined with the emotions and expressions of the real people portrayed. These images—icons—were created with "real light" using analog photographic technology, as if by "divine light." It is specifically Monika's combined mixed-media technique that allowed the transfer of the photographic image onto wood or Tyvek® paper. Some icons are finished with hand-painting or gilding, yet they remain photographic portraits of contemporary people in iconic forms (plywood 60x72 cm, 48x60 cm). Others are photographically recycled through the use of photographic collage, incorporating natural materials and presented as newly framed A4 photographs.
